"Seven Gods of Fortune(Shichifukujin)" temple walk

The Seven Gods are supposed to bring fortune and good health and were made up among fishermen and farmers in the 14th to 15th century. They became the object of popular veneration in the 17th century.
The group, which includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Shintoist divinities, symbolizes the seven essential virtues: longevity, chance, popularity, frankness, magnanimity, dignity, and kindness.
During New Year's Day celebrations, many Japanese make a pilgrimage to the temples and shrines dedicated to one of the members of the Shichifukujin to secure prosperity and good health for the new year. This pilgrimage is called Shichifukujin-meguri, and can be found in many places in Japan. In Tokyo City we also have the “Yanaka Shichifukujin-meguri”, one of Tokyo’s best Shichifukujin-meguri.

Each Shichifukujn has a traditional attribute:

    1. Ebisu, Ebisugod of fishers or merchants
    2. Daikokuten (Daikoku), god of wealth, commerce and trade
    3. Bishamonten, god of warriors
    4. Bensaiten (Benten-sama), goddess of knowledge, art and beauty, especially music
    5. Futurokuju, god of happiness, wealth and longevity
    6. Hotei, the fat and happy god of abundance and good health
    7. Jurojin, god of wisdom
      in these shrines and temples.
With close to these these shrines and temples along the streets of the city and circling parks & shops, let’s enjoy an easy day trip.
